Defraging on a hard drive is the act of moving related data bits closer to eachother on the drive platter. IE: two parts of the same file may have been written half way across the drive from eachother... slowing down access to that file. So defraging moves them right next to eachother so the file can be read quickly.
This has 0 affect on ram based systems. You can't defrag RAM in the sense that you defrag a HDD. And I would hope the ramsan is built so that it automaticly optimizes access paths on the fly.
But anyway, in a Random Acess Memory you don't need to defrag, because pulling piece A and piece B from two places is just as fast as pulling both from one place.

The speed gain is definitely smaller for ram drives, but there is still a speed increase in the form of fewer calls etc. Probably not noticeable unless extremely fragmented though (if even noticeable then).

That's actually not entirely true. Many memory architectures have a certain amount of latency to read the first byte, but then can read a certain number of bytes following that byte relatively cheaply. Relatedly, some systems allow multibyte reads for essentially the same cost as a single byte read. I don't know how the RAMSANs work internally, but my guess is that the designers set the block size of the 'disk' to take full advantage of whatever multi-byte capability they had available, so again no defragmentation would be required.
Err...sorry for nerding out like that. Sometimes I can't help myself. I should really get myself into a program.
To both of you... I'm not a ramsan expert.
Also keep in mind though that in EVE the data pieces are all fairly small. Which means access latency and per access bandwidth on a given memory chip are going to be major factors. For instance. you are talking to an agent. The agents picture is on one mem chip, the text on another and the mission online on a third. If they are all on the same chip, you have to wait for the system to read thru all of them before you get any of them. Even though they constitute seperate calls to memory, they would be qued on the controller in order recieved. And would be accessed in consecutive order. While if they are all on seperate chips the system can serve up each one as it reads it. And since the read/writes are going to be concurrent, rather than consecutive, it's actually marginally faster. (did that make sense?) This is of course assuming that each bank of memory in the system has an independant controller. Which seems likely given the huge amount of IO it acheives. Something like 400,000 a second?
Hard drives can't maintain speed and write/read while also optimizing data. A ramsan could, given a low enough load. (what that threshold is, or if it's even worth contemplating is well beyond me)

RAM doesn't HAVE to be wiped when the system is turned off.
The ram san is whats called "non-volatile" ram. (I believe) and therefore even if it's turned off it maintains data. Much the way a USB thumb drive or memory card in your phone/camera/playstation works.
